Route Description

1. Park on the moor just after the cattle grid. There is a large flat opening here. Ride back the way you’ve come heading north by the cattle grid (new bridleway gate installed). Cross straight over the road past the pub carpark onto another minor road. Follow this road down into Rising Bridge. Cross over the mini roundabout in Rising Bridge towards Eureka Animal Feeds. Just before the feed shop, turn right and follow the small back road past the row of houses and the children’s play area. Follow the road under the bypass using the underpass and climb up the steep hill on the other side.

2. At the top of the hill, turn right and pick up the narrow single track lane between the houses. This lane is stone wall lined on both sides and contours around the valley, heading back south towards Haslingden. Follow this lane until you pass a long barn with horse rosettes and trophies in the windows. Just past this equestrian property is a track to your left, taking you off the road and between two fields. Follow this stoney track to the end and then turn right, past several farms, houses and a children’s outdoor nursery. Cross over the road (which goes to the tip!) and keep heading in a straight line. The track continues on where it runs parallel with a small river – watch your step! Cross over the river and continue up the other side. This path is steep and rocky but the views from the top are worth it. As the path flattens out, the Halo will come into view, along with the mini wind turbine which powers the lights. Keep following the path to the end and a small car park. You can turn into the carpark to view the Halo up close or if not, continue around the hill and to the right, following the access road and affording amazing views over Rossendale. Follow the road back down into Haslingden.

3. At the end of the road, cross straight over and keep heading downhill. Take the next right, past a school with a metal horse sculpture. Take the first left and head steeply downhill to the main A road. The road says no entry but this is the only safe way to cross the A road for horses so ignore at your risk. Once on the main road, turn right and then immediately left onto the next side road. If you wait for a gap and then trot, this section isn’t an issue. Continue down the side road with views of Acrington Bypass ahead of you. Just before the bypass turn left and follow the road up and over the bypass using the road bridge. Make sure your horse is happy with motorway bridges! Continue through the industrial estate following the main road. This estate is busy during the working week but dead quiet at evenings and weekends. The road curves back to the Bypass. Take the righthand road just before the bypass and continue through the industrial estate.

4. Turn right at the give way lines (and small tunnel to your left) onto Cob Castle Road. Climb steeply uphill. As the road bends sharply left, keep straight and to the right onto a dirt track that heads uphill into the woods. Follow the bridleway through the woods, being careful of the drop to your right as it curves up and around the side of a quarry. You will soon pop out of the woods onto a flagged section of path. Pass through both bridleway gates and then head right and uphill for the best canter of your life! At the top of the grassy field, pass through the bridleway gate and follow the moorland track back to your parking spot.
