The Roaches is a stunning part of the Peak District and thanks to some new permissive bridleways, it’s now accessible to horse riders. This ride offers panoramic views to Tittersworth and beyond but can get the weather so best to ride on a clement day or risk riding in a cloud of fog! This route also rides past Luds Church, an ancient and mystical moss covered chasm, now made famous through Tiktok.
Route Description
1. Head right out of the parking spot and down the tarmac farm track. Just before the cattle grid, turn left onto the bridleway, passing through a gate. Follow the narrow track (be careful because it gets boggy. You may prefer to ride ontop of the path instead of in it.) Follow the stony path to the right and down into a beautiful valley with a stream on your left. Pass through a gate and then over the stream using the special bridleway bridge. Continue up the other side, taking care to watch your knees on the narrow sections(!).
2. Ride past a school on your right and then onto a tarmac lane heading up hill to Roaches End. There is almost always an ice cream at the top of this hill, come rain or shine. In winter he just switches from ice cream to hot chocolate! Ride past the ice cream van until the stone wall on your right ends, just before another cattle grid. Take a moment to admire the view in front of you before turning sharply to your right, across the grass to a gate with a chain around it. The chain is only clipped round, however it is nigh on impossible to do this on a horse, so you’ll need to dismount. Pass through this gate onto a permissive bridleway across the northern end of the Roaches.
3. At the path junction, take the left hand lower path that drops below the crags and is signed with a small fingerpost and a circle with a bike in it. Ride downhill on a narrow track, passing through a gate. Watch your step here to avoid the ditch on your left. The path soon flattens out into a small wooded section – this stretch is great for a turn of speed!
4. Turn right at the end of the grassy stretch onto a steep, rocky bridleway. Follow this up and over as it skirts round the edge of the moor and then drops down into the forest. Ride past the large boulders and the entrance to Luds Church and continue downhill on the wide forest track. Ride through the river and steeply up the other side.
5. Pass through a Scout Camp onto a tarmac lane and follow this into Gradbach. The lane will join with the main road through Gradbach at a tight T junction. Continue straight (right) to a cottage next to a bridge over a river. Turn right and over this bridge. Follow the road back to your parking space.
Parking
There is free parking for several trailers on the corner of The Moss on the way into Gradbach. Be sure to not block any gates.
