Ok, this isn’t a traditional horsey adventure, but it definitely still deserves a mention. Somerford Farm Ride is a fantastic all weather surfaced farm ride, available all year round. The route has the most perfect, bouncy arena surface the entire length which is really well maintained. The ground staff even harrow it on frosty days to ensure that it’s rideable in all weathers. The ride is a one direction fenced circuit with optional cross country jumps that can be missed out.
Route Description
1. Make sure you report to the office before setting off. The office has up-to-date maps of the route and will give you a talk around before you set off. The farm ride is one way meaning that everyone should flow round at similar speeds and despite the car park usually being busy, once out on the ride, it tends to swallow people up and you might not see another horse and rider at all. If you are worried about being overtaken, book on midweek or book the last slot for the day. Most people use the farm ride for sedate hacking but on weekends you can get teenagers using it for cross country practise. That said, there are big signs reminding riders to overtake with care and respect each other.
